The Arduino Uno is one of the most popular and accessible microcontrollers available and its dynamic community provides a wealth of ideas, tutorials and software. As a low cost learning platform it is second to none, and our class pack offers even better value for money. It's far less expensive than the Raspberry Pi and you don't need an extra keyboard, mouse, power supply or SD card cluttering up the desk. It's also easier to use than the Pi, it's ready to go just a few seconds after you plug it in while the Pi needs some time to boot into Linux.
Getting started couldn't be simpler, download the development software (Arduino IDE) and plug the Uno into your PC (USB A male to B male cable, 19-8660). There's no separate power supply, it gets power from your PC. The IDE comes with a set of example programs and you can have the Uno's on board LED blinking within minutes of getting started, a quick confidence booster. The IDE supports the C/C++ programming languages which are widely used in industry, simple to get started with and can build up to complex applications.
The Arduino Uno is Open Source hardware and is available under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license, which allows for both personal and commercial derivative works, as long as they credit Arduino and release their designs under the same license.
